Hawaii's Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii is a great destination for a romantic getaway, honeymoon or wedding!

This Island has it all, from active volcano's bubbling lava to some of the most romantic resorts in the world. A visit to Hawaii is not complete without seeing the Big Island.

A Short History:

Hawaii’s Big Island is a cumulative result of lava from 5 large volcanoes. It was over 1200 years ago that the Polynesians first set foot on the island. Through a comprehensive system of commoners and chiefs, they formed a distinct society of their own on the island. It was the ancient Polynesians who instilled deep rooted mythological beliefs and ritual worship. Soon afterwards, the Big Island’s King Kamehameha conquered the entire Hawaiian islands and proclaimed himself King.

Being a dictator, Kamehameha was largely disliked by his people and eventually he died at age 63 in his own Kona house. In 1820, missionaries arriving from Boston made the Big Island their home. They introduced Western laws, practices and a structured form of society in Hawaii. You can revisit the past during your next Hawaiian vacation by visiting the Lyman Museum and House in Hilo.  Lyman Museum Phone: (808) 935-5021.
